Turkish President Abdullah Gul addresses ambassadors within the scope of the 6th annual Turkish Ambassadors’ Conference in Turkish capital Ankara.

The year 2014 should be a new start for Turkey’s European Union (EU) negotiation process, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Tuesday.

“Both the Turkish and EU sides should come up with new political wills,” said the Turkish president addressing Turkish ambassadors over a banquet at the Cankaya presidential residence.

“We should remember that everything we have done for the EU was for the sake of Turkey and for Turkey to become stronger,” Gul stressed.

Considering developments around Turkey, Gul indicated that a very critical period which would affect Turkey’s future had started.

“Turkey is a safe haven as a result of essential reforms,” Gul added.

Gul indicated that Turkey’s power in foreign relations had increased when “democracy and economy became stronger” and “a trust was built” in the country.

Cautioning against turns that could lead the county to an era of instability and conflict, Gul stressed, “We should renew our diplomacy and security policy in relation to the reality to Turkey’s south.”
