Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has slammed Western countries which did not describe the overthrow of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi as a “coup.”

n_50096_4“Coups are evil, coups target people, the future, democracy,” Erdoğan said today in Istanbul. “I want this to be expressed by everyone with courage. I am surprised with the West. They couldn’t say ‘coup.’ But I congratulate the African Union which suspended the membership of Cairo.”

The African Union today suspended Egypt after the ouster of Morsi, in line with its strict rules against unconstitutional changes of government.

“European Parliament disregards its own values by not calling the military intervention in Egypt a coup. It is a test of sincerity and the West failed the class,” he said.

The prime minister said Morsi shouldn’t pay a price for his mistakes. “Morsi made mistakes; he can make mistakes. Is there anyone who did not make any mistake? It is the people who are paying the price,” the premier said, while bashing the army.

“The army’s attitude cannot be defined within democracy. Those who trust the power of weapons cannot build a democracy.”

The United Nations, the United States, the European Union and world powers did not condemn Morsi’s removal as a military coup.
