Turkey can not progress by transferring or purchasing technology, said Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Tuesday at the Turkish Scientific and Technical Researches Institution (TUBITAK) Science Awards ceremony held in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

-Abdullah_Gul_134132606Turkey has changed its priorities with economic and political stability and attaches importance to science, technology and research, Gul said at the meeting also attended by senior ministers. Stressing the need of producing and selling technology, Gul said Turkey spends one percent of its national income on research and development and it aims to rise it to two percent. He said Turkey has made regulations, increased the number of universities and started to get positive results in the field of science. “Turkey has become an important science and research center and there will be a decrease in brain drain,” Gul noted.  Prof. Alphan Sennaroglu from Koc University and Prof. Cihan Yurdaydin from Ankara University have been awarded TUBITAK science awards while Prof. Yusuf Altintas from British Columbia University and  Prof. Utku Unver from Boston University have received TUBITAK special awards.  11 TUBITAK Incentive Awards and one TUBITAK –TWAS Incentive Award have also been given to scientists.
