Myanmar-bound Turkish planeTurkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu set off for Myanmar on Wednesday with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s wife and daughter to deliver assistance to the province of Arakan, where a slaughter of Rohingya Muslims is being executed by extremists. A Turkish commission conduced by Davutoğlu and including Erdoğan’s wife Emine and daughter Sümeyye, left for Myanmar on Wednesday afternoon in a plane charged with aid supplies.

The commission will visit camps where Rohingya Muslims have taken protection and circularise humanitarian assistance to them. The aid from Turkey will be the 1st foreign assistance accepted by Myanmar besides United Nations aid.

The Prime Ministry has also recently started an aid campaign for Rohingya Muslims and the donations accumulated til now have surpassed $1.2 million.

A affirmation from the Foreign Ministry said apart from its implication in accosting the situation of the Rohingya Muslims, the “historic” visit will also be a opportunity to ameliorate mutual relations with Myanmar.

According to United Nations sources, since the beginning of the new wave of ethno-religious tensions and attacks by radical Buddhists and other fanatical groups that aim Muslims in Myanmar, nearly 100,000 people have left their homes. To fly to safety, some Rohingya Muslims, with children in their arms, walked shoeless in heavy rain through the jungle to arrive at the coast, from where they sailed to Bangladesh.
