The United States is becoming more careful in its ties with the Syrian YPG militia. Ankara has seen some changes in Washington’s attitudes regarding the relationship.

US support for the YPG has strained its relationship with Turkey, its NATO ally. Turkey regards the YPG as a terrorist group, an extension of PKK terrorists who have fought a 30 year insurgency in the southeast region of Turkey.

Washington supports the YPG in its fight against ISIS in Syria. However, it has called on the YPG to stop seeking additional territory.
