Arab lawmakers shouted “Allahu Akbar!” (“God is great!”) inside the assembly of Knesset (Israel’s parliament) today (Wednesday) while a preliminary reading of a controversial bill that would ban the use of loudspeakers to amplify the Muslim call to prayer (adhan) was approved.

The draft legislation imposes fines on violators ranging between the equivalent of $1,300 and $2,600 and aims to stop mosques from using loudspeakers to amplify the Muslim call to prayer in Israel and Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem.

This draft legislation seams to invoke controversies on dilemma between respect for the law and respect for the freedom of belief.
