The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey’s Aegean region has risen to 81.
Turkish authorities on Monday confirmed 79 were killed in Izmir, while two teenagers died on the Greek island of Samos.
3,500 tents and thirteen thousand beds have been deployed for temporary shelter for victims, Turkeys Disaster and Emergency Authority (AFAD) said Monday, while confirming 962 people had been injured in the earthquake.
Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said Sunday there are still people buried under rubble and there was no way they could tell how many. “Hard to give a number. There is an estimation, but I cannot share,” Koca said.
The earthquake of a magnitude 6.6 stuck the Aegean province of Izmir on Friday.
The country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said as of 9.30 a.m. local time (0630GMT) Sunday, there have been 850 aftershocks with 40 stronger than magnitude-4.0, Anadolu agency reported.
Search and rescue operations are still underway.
More than 740 victims have been discharged from hospitals so far, AFAD said Monday. (ANI/Big News Network)
