President Erdoğan Hosts Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman in Ankara

Ankara, Turkey – In a significant diplomatic engagement, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan welcomed Saudi Arabia’s Defense Minister, Prince Khalid bin Salman, to Ankara on July 2, 2024. This high-profile visit underscores the strengthening of bilateral relations and defense cooperation between Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Arrival and Reception in Ankara

Saudi Prince Khalid bin Salman was warmly received at Ankara Esenboğa Airport by key officials of Turkey, including the President of the Turkish Defense Industry Agency, Prof. Haluk Görgün. The visit featured a series of meetings aimed at enhancing military collaboration and addressing shared security concerns.

A major highlight was the signing of several agreements, notably a defense contract involving the procurement of advanced Turkish drones by Saudi Arabia. This deal, facilitated by Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar, includes the export of the Akıncı unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) and provisions for technology transfer and joint production. This agreement is expected to significantly boost the capabilities of the Saudi armed forces.

In their discussions, President Erdoğan and Prince Khalid bin Salman emphasized the importance of strategic cooperation in defense and security. They reiterated their commitment to regional stability and economic growth. President Erdoğan expressed Turkey’s readiness to work closely with Saudi Arabia. Consequently, they aim to tackle mutual security challenges and, furthermore, advance their shared interests.
