UEFA Targets Demiral After Stunning Austria Victory

The match, held on July 2, 2024, in Leipzig, Germany. Saw Turkey secure a dramatic 2-1 victory thanks to Merih Demiral’s stellar performance.

Controversial Celebration Sparks UEFA Scrutiny

Demiral, who scored both of Turkey’s goals, celebrated his second strike with a “grey wolf” hand gesture—a symbol deeply rooted in Turkish nationalism. This gesture has now become the center of controversy, prompting UEFA to investigate under Article 31(4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations for alleged inappropriate behavior.

Turkish Government Slams UEFA’s Decision

Reacting swiftly, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned UEFA’s investigation as unacceptable. They cited a 2023 report by the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The report clarified that the “grey wolf” sign is not inherently linked to right-wing extremism and is not banned in Germany. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs labeled the German authorities’ reactions to Demiral as xenophobic. Consequently, this sparked a heated debate.
