Turkey to Start Natural Gas Exports to Syria from Azerbaijan

Turkey will begin exporting natural gas to Syria on August 2, 2025, marking a significant milestone in energy cooperation between Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Syria. This move is part of an effort to boost Syria’s energy infrastructure and improve its electricity supply.

Natural Gas Pipeline from Kilis to Aleppo

The natural gas pipeline connecting Kilis in Turkey to Aleppo in Syria was completed in May 2025, paving the way for natural gas exports. With an expected gas flow of 6 million cubic meters, Turkey aims to generate 1,200 MW of electricity for Syria, which will significantly reduce power shortages. This collaboration, which includes Azerbaijan and Qatar, is part of a broader initiative to help rebuild Syria’s energy infrastructure.

Improving Syria’s Electricity Supply

Currently, electricity supply in Syria is limited to just 3-4 hours a day. With the new gas exports, Turkey aims to increase the daily electricity supply to 10 hours. The country already exports electricity to northern Syria, and the restoration of the Birecik-Aleppo line will ensure that nearly 900 MW of electricity will be delivered, providing for 1.6 million households.

Enhancing Regional Stability and Normalization

The energy projects are seen as a critical factor in stabilizing the region and accelerating the return of displaced Syrians. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, emphasized that these developments are facilitated by the partial lifting of sanctions, marking a step towards normalizing life in Syria.

Key Shale Oil Discoveries and Energy Development

Bayraktar also announced a significant shale oil discovery in Diyarbakir, where Turkey is collaborating with American companies to tap into vast reserves. With an estimated 4-6 billion barrels of shale oil in the region, the project will employ advanced extraction techniques. Additionally, Turkey is ramping up its natural gas production in the Black Sea, with the Osman Gazi platform expected to serve 8 million households by 2026.

Record Renewable Energy Target for 2025

As part of its long-term energy strategy, Turkey plans to add 10,000 MW of renewable energy capacity in 2025, surpassing the 7,000 MW achieved in 2024. This ambitious goal is expected to reduce Turkey’s reliance on foreign energy sources and create new jobs in the renewable sector.
