A cold weather system has moved into Turkey, ending a dry spell with rainfall in Istanbul. Experts from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) indicate that weather patterns will remain unstable. While the week began with mild temperatures, a significant shift is now unfolding.

This analytical report explores the predicted temperature drops and the possibility of a historic winter event. Households and businesses should prepare for unsettled conditions during the holiday period.

Heavy Rain Signals a Broader Shift

Recent data confirms that a rain-bearing system from the west is now influencing several regions. Istanbul and Ankara are experiencing intermittent rainfall after a prolonged dry period earlier this month. Temperatures in Istanbul initially hovered between 13°C and 14°C, staying slightly above seasonal averages.

However, the General Directorate of Meteorology warns of a sharp decline coming soon. Most regions will see a temperature drop of 5 to 8 degrees Celsius starting December 26, 2025. This change marks the end of stable autumn-like conditions for the Marmara region.

Forecast for Snow and Icy Conditions

The primary focus for many residents remains the potential for snow in Istanbul. According to MGM data, sleet is expected on the higher elevations of the Anatolian side by Saturday, December 27. By Monday, December 29, mixed rain and snow may spread across the entire city.

For the first time in roughly a decade, experts are highlighting New Year’s night as a potential window for snow. Minimum temperatures in Istanbul are forecast to drop to 0°C between December 26 and January 2, 2026. Authorities have issued warnings for icing and frost during the night and early morning hours.

Will it snow in Istanbul?

Impact on Transportation and Households

The coming cold spell will likely affect daily life, transportation, and the agricultural sector. Drivers are urged to remain vigilant as icy roads could disrupt travel during the busy holiday season. In inland regions like Ankara, temperatures may fall as low as -3°C, further increasing the risk of frost.

For businesses and SMEs, these weather changes necessitate early preparation for logistics and energy needs. While the snow offers a beautiful winter backdrop, it also brings logistical challenges in Istanbul. Will this be the year Istanbul finally greets the new year under a blanket of white?.
