Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Ali Babacan on Sunday said that the Prime Ministry motion approved by the Turkish Parliament earlier this week and one that authorized the Turkish government to send troops abroad was approved as a tool of deterrence.
In an interview he gave to the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, Ali Babacan stressed that Syria informed Turkey that Wednesday’s Syrian attack on south-eastern town of Akcakale in which 5 Turks were killed and 9 others wounded was not deliberate and the Syrians apologized for the incident.
“The Syrians must demonstrate their sadness with not only just words but acts as well,” Babacan underlined.
“Our basic principle is founded on a peaceful solution through foreign policy. We have lost citizens in Akcakale, including a mother and her children. It is within international laws for us to be able to retaliate against Syria,” Babacan noted.
Touching on Turkey’s plans for a new nuclear power plant, Babacan said that they would announce the winner of the nuclear power plant project in 2012.
Several Japanese companies, including Toshiba, have shown interest in Turkey’s nuclear power plant project.
“We certainly need a nuclear power plant in order to bring down our current account deficit,” Babacan also said.
