Kofi AnnanFormer United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is resigning as the UN-Arab League go-between in the 17-month-old Syria battle at the end of the month, United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon stated in a affirmation on Thursday.

“Mr. Annan has informed me, and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Nabil Elaraby, of his intent not to regenerate his mandatory when it runs out on 31 August 2012,” Ban told in a statement, adding up that he and Elaraby were in discussions on charging a successor to Annan.

“Kofi Annan deserves our fundamental appreciation for the unselfish way in which he has put his formidable skills and prestigiousness to this hardest and possibly thankless of assignments,” Ban told.
