Secretary-General of the Arab League Nabil al-Arabi has welcomed a Monday agreement between Yemeni political parties aimed at resolving the protracted problems that have long dogged the country’s South.
In a Thursday statement released by his office, al-Arabi hailed the efforts of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to help reach the agreement among the country’s political forces.
The chief of the pan-Arab body also called on all sides in Yemen to continue working together to solve all the country’s problems.
The Yemeni parties on Monday signed a document that aims to find “a just solution” to the South’s problems, including the possibility of adopting a federal system of governance.
Southern Yemenis have long complained of widespread discrimination, citing the recent dismissal of thousands of southerners from government posts and the arbitrary confiscation of property.
Secessionist sentiments have been on the rise in recent years amid sporadic clashes between Yemeni security forces and separatist groups.
Hadi’s government had earlier offered an official apology for the 1994 civil war, pledging to reinstate sacked employees and army officers of southern origin.
The government has also recently created a fund with the stated aim of providing sacked workers with compensation.
