“Ateşin Düştüğü Yer” (Where the Fire Burns), a road movie centered on so-called “honor killings,” has been selected to represent Turkey in the race for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in the upcoming Academy Awards, Turkish media reported on Thursday.

Directed by İsmail Güneş and inspired by a real-life event, “Ateşin Düştüğü Yer” follows the story of a father, who is trapped between his conscience and tradition, and his daughter, who is pregnant from an illicit affair.

The Committee of Artistic Activities (SEK), an independent body formed by 14 Turkish film industry professionals, which oversees Turkish productions’ participation in local and overseas events, announced on Wednesday that it has selected Güneş’s film from an 11-piece shortlist of candidates, which also included the comedy “Entelköy Efeköy’e Karşı” (Ecotopia), the box office hit “Fetih 1453” (The Conquest: 1453), “Zenne Dancer,” a drama based on the story of Turkey’s first “gay honor killing,” and “Lal Gece” (Night of Silence), a drama about child brides.

“Ateşin Düştüğü Yer” won two awards earlier this month at the Montreal World Film Festival; the top prize of the festival’s World Competition and the FIPRESCI Prize from the fest’s International Federation of Film Critics jury.

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Jan. 15.
