A unique snake species called “cerastes,” known as the desert horned viper, has been seen at the Küre Mountains National Park for the first time in the region.

The national park, located between the provinces of Bartın and Kastamonu, has been under wild life monitoring, in a bid to archive the fauna diversity at the national park. The viper was found by Yusuf Ardıç, a wild life technician working on the region’s natural diversity.

“The role of snakes in the ecological chain is vital. The presence of desert vipers is, therefore, important for fauna diversity at our national park,” said the director of Küre Mountains National Park, Ahat Deliorman.

Cerastes is a genus of small, venomous vipers found in the deserts and semi-deserts of northern North Africa eastward through Arabia and Iran.
