BaydaAt least fourteen downed in Bayda state after fighter pilots mistake 2 cars carrying civilians for al-Qaeda members.

An assault by fighter airplanes in Yemen has erroneously bang vehicles carrying civilians going to south of the capital, Sanaa, killing fourteen, including women and children, officals and tribesmen told.

Military officials told Sunday’s air raids in Radaa in the province of Bayda were based on faulty intelligence that the passengers were al-Qaeda members.

Projectiles fired from the military planes bang 2 vehicles carrying local residents coming back to their villages. Tribesman Sheik Ahmed Ali told the dead included 3 women and 3 children.

The attack actuated furious protests by relatives of the victims, residents stated the Reuters news agency.

The impoverished Arabian Peninsula state has become a key battlefield for the United States in its war against al-Qaeda.

United States drones have regularly aimed al-Qaeda suspects.

On Sunday, a United States drone strike downed a top al-Qaeda figure wanted for allegedly masterminding a 2002 attack on a French oil tanker.

The country has been in turmoil since an uprising against former president Ali Abdullah Saleh started in January last year.

Saleh stepped down in February but fighters have managed to fortify their foothold in remote regions during the unrest..
