Ashton ondemnes the Syrian regime for the deaths of more than 300 people in air strikes on civilian targets in rebel-held areas in Aleppo.

Catherine Ashton, European Union’s top foreign policy official, on Wednesday condemned the Syrian regime for the deaths of more than 300 people in air strikes on civilian targets in rebel-held areas in Aleppo over the last week.

“The High Representative is deeply concerned with reports of an escalating bombing campaign in the city of Aleppo that has lasted for over a week leaving more than 300 people dead, many of  them children,” Ashton’s spokesperson said in a statement.

Ashton urged the Syrian government to respect international humanitarian law and called for an immediate cessation of violence. She also urged battling sides in the country to “stick to their commitments to participate in the Geneva II,” a planned international peace conference scheduled for next month in Switzerland.

Opposition activist groups in Syria have said air forces escalated strikes on areas controlled by rebel forces in the northern city of Aleppo killing hundreds of civilians in raids deploying “barrel bombs” oil drums filled with explosives and metal shrapnel.
