Facebook has announced that it will enact a ban on the private sale of firearms on its platform. Up until now, guns have been available on Facebook without background checks.

The new rules will not affect the right of licensed firearms retailers to advertize on the site, but will prevent individual users from arranging peer-to-peer gun sales.

Facebook enacted limitations on firearms posts in 2014, after the social network was revealed to have become “one of the world’s largest marketplaces for guns,” according to the New York Times.
