Germany appears to have moved a step closer to banning its far-right neo-Nazi party.

img_606X341_germany-npd-party-051212Despite a protest from the group’s supporters, interior ministers from Germany’s 16 regional states recommended pursuing a ban of the NPD on Wednesday. Germany’s Federal Interior minister Hans-Peter Friedrich also voted in favour of the move at the gathering in the Baltic resort of Warnemunde.

Banning political parties is legally complicated in Germany and must go to the constitutional court.

But calls to outlaw the NPD, which authorities say is inspired by Hitler, have grown since last year’s discovery that a neo-Nazi cell waged a racist killing spree of foreigners over nearly a decade.

The failure to uncover the group sparked accusations the government had underestimated the danger of the far right for years.
