572nd Anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul

The Conquest of Istanbul: 572 Years of Legacy

The 572nd anniversary of the Istanbul Conquest reminds us of a pivotal moment that altered the course of global history. On May 29, 1453, Sultan Mehmed II, just 21 years old, led the Ottomans in a historic campaign that brought down the Byzantine Empire and opened a new chapter for the Islamic world and Europe alike.

Once known as Constantinople, this ancient city had served as the capital of three powerful empires—Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman. Its capture was not just a military victory; it was the fulfillment of a revered prophecy in Islamic tradition.

A Prophesied Victory in Islamic Tradition

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had foretold the fall of Constantinople, declaring:
“Surely Constantinople shall be conquered. What a wonderful commander is the one who conquers it, and what a wonderful army is his army.”

This hadith deeply inspired Muslim rulers throughout history. From the Umayyads to the Abbasids, many attempted to claim the honor. Yet, it was Sultan Mehmed II who achieved what others could not, etching his name in history as Fatih—the Conqueror.

His conquest was marked not by destruction but by tolerance. One of his first acts was to convert Hagia Sophia into a mosque, signaling both victory and peace.

A Strategic and Technological Masterstroke

The Istanbul Conquest was not merely a spiritual goal; it was also a masterclass in military strategy. Sultan Mehmed II employed advanced siege techniques, including massive cannons and the construction of Rumeli Fortress to cut off aid from the north.

Perhaps most famously, the Ottomans transported ships overland to bypass the chained Golden Horn. This bold maneuver shocked the Byzantines and turned the tide in favor of the Ottomans.

The final assault on May 29, 1453, began at dawn. By mid-morning, the gates were breached. The city had fallen, not just to an army, but to an idea: the unity of East and West under one powerful Islamic rule.

A Cultural Renaissance Begins

The conquest was not just about borders. It transformed Istanbul into a vibrant center of Islamic culture, scholarship, and architecture. Sultan Mehmed II welcomed people of different faiths and backgrounds, rebuilding the city into a capital of tolerance and knowledge.

He invited scholars, artists, and scientists to make Istanbul their home. Libraries were established, madrasas flourished, and the city grew into a symbol of enlightened Islamic governance.

His legacy includes not just territorial expansion but the transformation of a capital that would guide the Ottoman Empire for centuries.

Celebrating the Conquest ıf IstanbulToday

Modern-day Istanbul continues to honor this historic moment. Each year on May 29, events ranging from Mehter marches to public concerts and museum tours commemorate the legacy of the Istanbul Conquest.

In 2025, celebrations include a march from Edirnekapı to Saraçhane, free public transportation, and open museum access for residents. From scholarly talks to children’s activities, the city remembers the spirit of a conquest that redefined civilizations.
