Turkey’s third largest city, the Aeagean province’s last bid was for 2015.

The Turkish province of Izmir has lost its chance to host a World Expo, its second losing bid in a row.

The Expo 2020 contest is currently in its voting stage.

Izmir, the third largest city in Turkey located on the Aegean coast, went up against Yekaterinburg of Russia, Dubai of United Arab Emirates and Sao Paolo of Brazil.

Sao Paolo was eliminated in the first round, followed by Izmir in the second.

Representatives from 167 states in the membership of the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE) are voting in rounds to elect the host city.

Izmir lost with 36 votes against 87 for Dubai and 41 for Yekaterinburg.

World Expos act as a catalyst for economic, cultural and social change and generate lasting legacies for the host city and nation.

EXPO 2010 took place in Shanghai, attracting 73 million people.

EXPO 2015 will be held in Milan, which beat Izmir during the final vote.
