Muslims Should Be Fairly Involved in International Decision-Making
Erdoğan Calls for Muslim Representation in Global Institutions
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has urged for fair representation of Muslims in international decision-making bodies. He stressed the need for reform within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Speaking at the 16th Traditional Iftar Dinner with Ambassadors in Ankara, Erdoğan highlighted the importance of restructuring global governance. He emphasized the need to reflect the demographic and political realities of the modern world.

A Quarter of the World, Yet Underrepresented
Erdoğan emphasized that Muslims make up nearly 25% of the global population. However, they remain significantly underrepresented in key decision-making mechanisms. “Muslims should be represented as they deserve,” he stated. He advocated for reforms that would grant Muslim-majority nations a stronger voice on the global stage.
He criticized the rigidity of existing global structures. According to Erdoğan, they have failed to evolve with changing geopolitical conditions. He argued that resistance to necessary reforms only deepens international crises. As a result, global governance is becoming increasingly ineffective.
Islamic Country with Veto Power: A Necessity, Not a Choice
One of Erdoğan’s key points was the need for an Islamic country to hold a permanent seat with veto power at the UNSC. He argued that this step is not just a proposal but an obligation. He believes it is crucial for achieving a more just and balanced global order. Without meaningful reforms, he warned, the world will continue to suffer from unresolved conflicts and growing instability.
Challenges in the Global System: Islamophobia, Trade Wars, and Inequality
Erdoğan pointed to pressing global issues such as Islamophobia, rising anti-migrant sentiment, and economic rivalries. He stated that these factors are pushing the international system toward a dangerous impasse. Without immediate action, he warned, the world risks descending into chaos, governed by the “law of the jungle.”
The president also cautioned that an unjust international order would lead to greater turmoil. Vulnerable nations will suffer the most. “If left unchecked, this will inevitably lead to political and military explosions. The early signs of this are already visible,” he stated. He urged world leaders to take responsibility for addressing these challenges.
“The World is Bigger Than Five”
Reiterating his well-known slogan, “The world is bigger than five,” Erdoğan asserted that global governance should not be dictated by a handful of powerful nations. Instead, he called for an inclusive system that accommodates diverse voices and perspectives.
He stressed that the need for reform is not just about resolving immediate crises. Rather, it is about replacing a flawed system with one that ensures long-term stability and justice. “The time has long passed for global decision-making mechanisms to adapt to the changing conditions of the world,” Erdoğan remarked.
Turkey’s Role in European and Global Security
In addition to addressing global governance issues, Erdoğan emphasized Turkey’s strategic importance to European security and international stability. He reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to European Union (EU) membership. He described it as a “strategic priority.”
“It is becoming increasingly difficult for Europe to maintain its position as a global actor without Turkey securing its rightful place,” he stated. He underscored Turkey’s geopolitical significance.
