Turkish security forces achieved a major milestone in counterterrorism efforts during the first ten months of 2024. They neutralized 722 PKK/YPG terrorists through over 40,500 operations across the country. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced these figures during the Planning and Budget Committee meeting in the Turkish parliament on Wednesday, highlighting the government’s ongoing commitment to national security.

Yerlikaya stated, “We neutralized 722 terrorists during 40,521 operations in both rural and urban areas.” This large-scale effort reflects Turkey’s unwavering resolve to combat terrorism on multiple fronts.

Multi-Front Counterterrorism Operations

In addition to operations targeting the PKK and YPG, Turkey intensified efforts against other terrorist groups. From January 1 to November 1, security forces conducted 4,177 operations against the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO). These efforts led to 935 arrests, with suspects accused of plotting to infiltrate and destabilize the state. Another 1,205 operations targeted Daesh, resulting in the detention of 655 individuals suspected of involvement in terror-related activities.

Yerlikaya also emphasized the effectiveness of preemptive measures. “In the first 10 months of this year, 92 planned terrorist attacks were prevented, including 72 bombings,” he revealed. These thwarted attacks underscore the importance of Turkey’s vigilance in protecting its citizens from harm.

High-Level Terrorist Neutralizations

A significant highlight of the year was the elimination of 35 high-ranking terrorists. These individuals played key roles in planning and executing attacks. Neutralizing them disrupted the operational capabilities of various terror networks and sent a strong message about Turkey’s zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism.

The PKK, which Turkey, the United States, and the European Union classify as a terrorist organization, has waged a 40-year campaign of violence that has claimed over 40,000 lives. The victims include women, children, and elderly individuals. The YPG, the Syrian branch of the PKK, continues to pose a significant challenge in the region. Meanwhile, FETO stands accused of attempting to overthrow the government through systematic infiltration of state institutions, such as the military, police, and judiciary.

A Strong Message to Terror Groups

Turkey’s proactive measures against terrorism highlight its commitment to regional stability. By targeting terrorist organizations on multiple fronts, the government aims not only to protect its citizens but also to maintain its standing as a stable power in an often volatile region. These efforts resonate with Turkey’s broader strategy of ensuring peace and security both within its borders and beyond.

Yerlikaya’s detailed report underscores the importance of coordinated, multi-agency counterterrorism strategies. The continued success of these operations depends on technological advancements, intelligence sharing, and strong public support.
