Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal announced that the Cabinet of Ministers has approved a draft agreement with the United States aimed at investing in rare earth elements. The decision marks a significant step in Ukraine’s economic and resource development strategy.

Strategic Investment in Rare Earth Elements

Shmyhal shared on social media that the agreement was discussed and approved during a Cabinet meeting. He described it as an “investment and development fund” between Ukraine and the US, emphasizing its importance for the country’s future growth.

The Prime Minister clarified that the agreement no longer includes a controversial clause requiring Ukraine to contribute $2 for every $1 of aid received, nor does it involve a $500 billion debt. This revision makes the deal more favorable for Ukraine’s economic stability.

US and Ukraine Strengthen Economic Ties

US President Donald Trump confirmed that the agreement on rare earth elements would be signed during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s upcoming visit to the United States. However, Trump also stressed that Ukraine should abandon its NATO aspirations for security guarantees.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump highlighted the significance of the deal, stating that the US would take the lead in processing Ukraine’s valuable mineral resources. He also reiterated his stance that the European Union should take greater responsibility for the Ukraine conflict.

  • “As you know, we have given about $350 billion, while Europe has contributed $100 billion. That’s a big difference. We are separated by an ocean, but Europe is much closer. It is their issue to handle, and they should step up,” Trump remarked.

Ukraine’s Security and NATO Dilemma

While acknowledging the strategic benefits of US involvement in Ukraine’s rare earth industry, Trump reaffirmed his belief that Ukraine should abandon its NATO ambitions.

  • “I can tell you, forget about NATO. That’s what started this whole situation in the first place,” he stated.

Trump Criticizes the EU, Praises Putin

In his remarks, Trump criticized the European Union, claiming that it was designed to undermine the United States.

  • “Let’s be honest—the EU was created to weaken the US, and they’ve done a good job at it. But now, I am President,” Trump declared.

He also referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as a “very smart and cunning man,” adding that he had dealt with much worse individuals in the past.

As Ukraine moves forward with this agreement, the geopolitical implications of its relationship with the US and NATO will continue to shape its future.
