Çankırı Museum

Çankırı Museum

The first core of Çankırı Museum has been formed with 116 works collected from the region by Şükrü Dölen, Former Chairman of Public Education and inspectors of Directorate of National Education. As the result of the studies that have been started upon the occurrence of the need for a museum for the preservation and exhibition of these works, the existing collection has been exhibited in a part of the lower floor of the Public Education Building by M. Ziya Kaleli on May 16th 1972 and hence the first Archeology and Ethnography Museum of Çankırı has started its activity. The Museum, has continued its studies in this building until 1976, but in this year, the Public Education building has been destroyed and 100 Yıl Culture Center has been constructed in its place and the works have been stored in a classroom of Çankırı High School and the bureau activities of the museum have been carried out from there. When the construction of 100 Yıl Culture Center has been completed, the museum has been moved to the second floor of this building and opened for visit on August 23rd 1981.

The traces of the civilizations that lived in other regions of Anatolia are also found in this region. The works belonging to Neolitic, Calcolithic, Old Bronze, Hittite, Frig, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman Period are exhibited and introduced in this Museum.

The archeological and ethnographical works are exhibited together in the exhibition hall of the museum.

In the archeology section, the works belonging to Old Bronze, Hittite, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Periods are exhibited. There are cooked earth cans, bones, glasses, beads, bronze tools and ornamental goods, tear and essence bottles, medical tools, oil lamps, needles, ring stones and various sculpture parts among the exhibited works.

In the ethnography section, there are various weavings, hand works, calligraphy art samples, print molds, clothes, guns, ornamental tools and various works used in daily life belonging to Çankırı and its surroundings are being exhibited.

In the eastern part of the hall, a historical oxcart, which has carried ammunition in İnebolu, Kastamonu, Çankırı, Ankara line during the Independence War is being exhibited. In the exhibition hall reserved for glass works there are glass works belonging to Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.
There are lion sculptures, grave stells, mile stones, architectural parts, inscriptions and grain stock earthenware jars belonging to various civilizations on the sidewalk outside the building.
