Honoring Heritage at the Ethnosport Culture Festival

The Ethnosport Culture Festival returns to Istanbul, transforming Atatürk Airport’s grounds into a vibrant celebration of tradition and unity. From May 22-25, more than 1,000 athletes representing 20 countries will gather, showcasing ancestral sports and cultural values that connect generations. Organized by the World Ethnosport Confederation, this event does more than highlight ancient games—it invites families to rediscover their roots and share in global heritage.

Expanding the Ethnosport Movement

World Ethnosport Confederation President Bilal Erdoğan describes the festival as a revival of culture, not just a sports event. Since its start in 2015 in Kyrgyzstan, the Ethnosport initiative has grown from a regional effort to an international movement. Today, it includes 42 member groups across 27 countries, with plans to reach 60 nations soon. The mission is clear: safeguard traditions and pass them on to future generations.

Tradition Meets Family in Modern Times

This year’s theme, “Tradition Begins in the Family,” reflects Turkey’s designation of 2025 as the Year of the Family. For the first time, a “Family Tent” will offer workshops, traditional games, and family activities to encourage parents and children to engage together. These activities aim to weave cultural heritage into daily life and inspire curiosity in young minds.

Rediscovering Ancestral Sports and Play

From mounted archery to traditional board games like Mangala, the Ethnosport Culture Festival introduces visitors to a world beyond screens. Organizers emphasize the value of physical play, aiming to counter digital dependency among youth. “We take horses to schools and teach archery, showing children that play means more than pixels,” Erdoğan explains. The festival’s true value lies in these direct experiences—such as a child’s first horseback ride or the taste of Uzbek pilaf.

A Platform for Cultural Diplomacy

Expecting over a million visitors, including 400,000 students, the Ethnosport Culture Festival is fast becoming a hub for cultural diplomacy. It offers a unique space for Turkey to present its traditions to a global audience while learning from other cultures. Erdoğan and his team gather feedback every year, constantly improving the event. The growing awareness of Ethnosport in Istanbul highlights the festival’s impact on cultural connection.
