Turkey: A Pillar of European Security
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has emphasized Turkey’s pivotal role in safeguarding European security. Speaking at the NATO informal foreign ministers’ meeting in Antalya, he underlined Ankara’s unique geopolitical position and its dependable partnership within the NATO alliance.
“Turkey is crucial for stability in our region and for European security,” Tsahkna told Anadolu Agency. The NATO gathering took place at the NEST Congress Center, highlighting Turkey’s growing prominence in Euro-Atlantic defense strategies.
A Deep and Trustworthy Partnership
Over the years, Turkey and Estonia have built strong bilateral ties. Many Estonians frequently visit Turkey, describing it as “safe and beautiful.” Tsahkna noted that this close relationship extends beyond tourism into the defense sector.
“Turkey is our strategic NATO partner. Estonia has signed major procurement agreements, including for military vehicles and other systems,” he explained. These deals are among the largest in Estonia’s history, showcasing the deepening defense collaboration.
Looking ahead, Estonia expects even closer cooperation. Tsahkna praised Turkey as “a reliable partner,” particularly as Europe seeks advanced and dependable military solutions.
Europe Must Invest in Its Own Defense
Minister Tsahkna echoed growing calls for European countries to increase their defense spending. He supported former U.S. President Donald Trump’s push for NATO allies to share the security burden more equitably.
“The U.S. has carried much of the load in recent years. It’s time for Europe to step up,” he said. “In this regard, President Trump’s pressure is not only justified—it’s necessary. European nations must invest more to secure the region.”
Turkey’s Stabilizing Influence in a Volatile Region
Tsahkna emphasized Turkey’s key role in maintaining regional stability amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza, Syria, and Iran. He described Turkey as “the strongest power in a very complex region.”
“Turkey is essential in balancing tensions, countering terrorism, and driving solutions. It truly shields Europe from instability,” he said.
He also acknowledged Turkey’s contribution to peace efforts, including its involvement in the reported disarmament of the PKK terrorist group. “This is a positive development,” he added.
