Antalya – Side Museum

SİDE MUSEUM

Located in Side town of Manavgat District 8 km from Manavgat. Ancient agora bath from A.D. 5-6th centuries, dating from Roman Age, was restored in 1960/61 and converted into a museum.

The majority of exhibits in the museum are the ruins discovered by Prof. Dr. Arif Müfid Mansel in excavations during 1947-1967, in the ancient town of Side. There are inscriptions, weapon embossing from Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Periods, sculptures which are Roman Period copies of Greek originals, torsos, temples, tomb steles, portraits, ostotecs and column pedestals on exhibition in the museum.
Eexhibits in Bath Building (Museum)

Number 1 Hall (Fridigarium)

Some basalt craters from the Late Hittite Period, weapon embossing work from the Hellenistic Period, sun dials, temples from the Roman period exhibited.

Number 2 Hall (Sudatorium)

Torsos from Roman period exhibited.

Number 3 Hall (Caldarium) 

Inscription from Hellenistic Period, amphores from Roman Period, Heracles, Three Graces, Nike sculptures and embossing arts exhibited.

Number 4 Hall (Tepidarium)

Tombs from Roman period, Hermes, Hygieia, Athena, Nike, Apollo sculptures, torsos and portraits exhibited.

Exhibits:

Ostothek tombs, columns, column pedestals, column capitals, embossing work, inscriptions, steles and various architectural remains from Hellenistic and Roman periods exhibited.

RUINS

1. SİDE: Theatre

Has a capacity of 15 000 seats. The audience section is divided in half by means of a diazoma. Orchestra in a semi-circle curve. Stage building is two or three storey. Late Empire Period gladiator fights and animal fights were made here. In A.D. 5-6 th centuries during Byzantine Period it was used as an open air church. The theatre is dated from middle of A.D. 2nd century. The Apollo Temple is located within Byzantine Basilica together with the Athena Temple. In Corinthian style and peripteros design. From Roman period. Dates from A.D. 150’s. A section was restored in 1983-1990 and recovered.

2. SELGE: Theatre
Has a capacity of 87000 seats. the audience section is divided in two halves with a diazome. Stage building destroyed. Built in A.D. 3th century during Roman period.

Olukköprü: 5 km. north of Beşkonak(Bozyaka) of Manavgat District. Single vault. Built during Roman period.

3. SELEUKEIA: Agora From Hellenistic Period. Built in the second half of A.D. 1st century and or in the beginning of 2nd century. There is an odeon and a church in one section.

Side Aquaducts:

Located on western side of Manavgat river in Manavgat district. Takes the water from 2 km. south of Sevinç village and it carries to Side over 30 km. Built in Roman Period. Most parts of aquaducts and tunnels have remained intact until present time.

Kargıhan

Located in Beydiğin Village of Manavgat. Built in Seljuki period. Most parts are still in good condition.
