In a statement released yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye applauded the decision of Armenia to formally recognize the State of Palestine. The move follows similar decisions by Spain, Ireland, Norway, and Slovenia earlier this year, adding momentum to the international campaign for Palestinian statehood.

Statement by the Ministry

“We welcome Armenia’s decision to recognize the State of Palestine,” the Ministry stated, emphasizing that this act aligns with international law, justice, and conscience. “Türkiye will continue its efforts for more countries to recognize Palestine.”

The statement highlighted Türkiye’s long-standing commitment to the Palestinian cause, advocating for a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine. Furthermore, it reiterated the importance of upholding international law and human rights in the region, condemning any actions that undermine the prospects for peace.

Palestinian officials have hailed Armenia’s recognition of Palestine as a significant step towards achieving their aspirations for self-determination. They expressed gratitude for the growing international support, calling on other nations to follow suit.

Israeli Reaction: Decision Complicates Peace Process

However, the decision has drawn criticism from some quarters. Consequently, Israel expressed disappointment and urged countries to refrain from unilateral actions that could complicate the peace process. They maintain that direct negotiations between the two parties should determine the status of Palestine.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed these concerns, asserting that recognizing Palestine does not preclude negotiations but rather strengthens the Palestinian position and contributes to a more balanced and just outcome. They called on the international community to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and support their right to self-determination.

Türkiye’s Foreign Policy on Palestine

Türkiye’s unwavering support for Palestine has been a cornerstone of its foreign policy, and the recent statement reaffirms its commitment to a peaceful and just resolution of the conflict. The recognition by Armenia is seen as a positive development that could encourage other countries to take similar steps, potentially paving the way for a more favorable international environment for the Palestinian cause.

As the international community continues to grapple with the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Türkiye’s unwavering support for Palestine serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding international law, human rights, and the principles of justice and self-determination.
